The new Afrikable’s Solidarity Holidays programme comes out at last. This is our 8th edition and we are very proud to say that so far more than 400 people have been able to participate in the project, understand a new reality and fulfil many of their dreams :)

Afrikable is not an intermediary agency, which is why our project remains the same: we work towards the holistic empowerment of women as a way to achieve their independence and improve their lives, for this purpose we empower women economically by offering them a decent job under fair trade standards and access to microcredit. Social empowerment is achieved by offering them an education and literacy, as well as information and advice on their rights. Women are psychologically empowered through reflection circles where we work on their self-esteem and self-confidence, develop their leadership and communication skills, awareness and decision-making, as well as their emotional development.

With the new project we are launching, Maternity Home, Afrikable empowers women from health, through a Maternal and Reproductive Health Center where we stand up for women’s sexual and reproductive rights and promote their health, which are key to achieving gender equality and women empowerment.

While women are at work, their children attend Afrikable’s free preschool. We take care of their babies so they can balance work and family lives in the best way possible.

New this year is an organic vegetable garden and a chicken coop that help us provide a balanced menu at the dining hall, which is also free and provides food for children and pregnant women living in extreme poverty and at risk of exclusion from the area.

In case you haven’t decided yet :), here’s Sandra Fernandez’s testimony, who participated in the project during August:

"JUST ONE MONTH
It’s been almost 4 months, 4 months since I came back from the most amazing month of my life.
A month in which I experienced new cultures I never thought I would experience from within.
A month in which for once, day after day, I would get up feeling happy, even though I find it so hard to get up early!
A month in which I knew I would get hugs, genuine hugs, first thing in the morning.
A month in which I met a group of holidaymakers with the same enthusiasm as me, I met them and today we know this is long term.
A month seeing women with a smile on their face despite the weight they carry on their shoulders, which is a lot!!
A month that made me forget the absurd idea that I was going to feel sorry for them and start feeling sorry for us, who have everything we want but are certainly empty.
A month enjoying the people of Lamu, the way they feel music, their beaches, the boat trips, their “pole pole” and *HAKUNA MATATA*, Afrikable’s enthusiasm and, especially, the affection. Seeing the wonder Lola and Merche, Afrikable’s founders, have created and becoming a part of this big family thanks to Anita and Cris, my coordinators.
Many will think it was just one month, that’s nothing, what an exaggeration! That’s what I thought at first, but it was an intense month, with all kind of emotions. Experiencing things we had never experienced before.
A month that was enough to make me want to come back, well, enough to know that I’m coming back.
And yes, it was JUST ONE MONTH”

First reason-Take part in life

Travelling is surprising, it enriches you, it makes you grown as a person and, above all, it is really addictive. Once you start to see the world you do not want to stop because each tour, each destination, activates your senses and when they are working at full capacity you cannot stop smiling.

What would you think if apart from the destinations you could also have the opportunity of meeting the local people? Getting inside the reality of the soil you are stepping on instead of just seeing the touristic places. Give yourself the time to sit down and chat with local people, understand their interests, their worries, their habits, their culture, give them the opportunity of getting to know you...In short, take part in life. Here you have the first reason to choose volunteer holidays in Afrikable ;-)

Second reason- From knowing to understanding

If apart from knowing a different reality and living with local people you have the opportunity of taking part in a project for international cooperation, seeing how it works from the inside, meeting the people who make it possible and meeting other people with the same concerns as you...the picture seems like these conversations during which time flies. Thoughts that enrich us and help us understand a little bit more the reality we were talking about, because through volunteer holidays you do not just get to know but to understand. Because you will support a project and you will be a part of it.

A participatory and engaged experience in which you can contribute during volunteer holidays and once you return home, because you will have the opportunity of sharing your experience with your people and become the eyes of those who have not had the opportunity of living this enriching experience. Your journey continues in the North to achieve changes in the South.

Third reason- It arouses surprise capacity

UVolunteer holidays are the perfect antidote to people who thinks they have lost their surprise capacity. If you join Afrikable volunteer holidays each moment is good to share, to learn, to cooperate, to live an experience full of smiles. It is always a good moment to be moved and to rejoice for having decided that this year holidays will be full of solidarity. A journey with start date but without finish date.

Would you like to be surprised?  Here we explain you how to participate

Would you like to do international volunteering during your holidays but you don´t know where to start, how to organize it or what can you bring to the organization you work with? If you are looking for answers to these questions, in we are going to do a quick tour through the different types of volunteering that exist, their goals and what to expect from each one. Key issues when making your choice, contribute and get the most out of your experience as a volunteer so...let ´s answer these questions!

What types of volunteering do exist?

Volunteering typologies can be very varied according to the aspect we have into account when classifying. There´s volunteer programs according to the project´s aim, the involvement and time devoted by the volunteer or his activity inside the organization. Volunteering Platform in Spain  divides them into social action volunteering, focused on the local level; action for development volunteering, which has an international character and virtual volunteering, for causes that do not require physical presence.

Involvement and activity

Afrikable has different volunteering programs that fit within the three types abovementioned. On the one hand, we have social action volunteering which is the one done by volunteers from Spain by organizing street markets and information days to improve awareness; on the other hand we have action for development volunteering the one that takes place in Lamu and finally, virtual volunteering the one done by volunteers from their homes, like maintaining the website or doing different communication actions.

Voluntario EscuelaFurthermore, there is another way of collaboration: through the volunteer holidays program. Inside this program, volunteers take part in a  specific area of the project that allows them to get involved and to get to know another reality. It is a real cultural exchange that offers the possibility of getting to know different ways of living because we cannot forget that after this experience, volunteers go back home with a backpack full of everything they learn, that is a lot.

If you decide to enroll this program, during your experience you will be accompanied by the volunteer holiday program coordinator, a volunteer who acts as an ambassador for the volunteers. He will guide you and help you so you get the most out of your experience. The coordinator is a long term volunteer who takes part directly on the program development and implementation. However, as a volunteer, more than analyzing the profile two aspects should be evaluated: involvement and awareness.

 Involvement and awareness

Your involvement implies being opened to change things, to give in, to lose control capacity and to be willing to be influenced by new learning beyond the mere performance of a task. This experience should work as an awareness tool, that will lead you to the direct knowledge of a reality that you will be able to share with your environment in the future. Because raise awareness means transmitting strength, enthusiasm and energy to change other people feelings and attitudes. Raise awareness means develop consciousness and mobilize change. Are you ready to take part on our holidays program? If yes, the first step is training.

Afrikable training

Training and information are essential when selecting a volunteering program so it meets your expectations. This is the reason why it is mandatory attending to the training sessions organized by Afrikable in Madrid and Barcelona because it facilitates your involvement in the organization, it gives you the opportunity to meet the human team and it motivates your action in the NGO. Don´t forget that in these meetings you can meet future colleagues to share this unforgettable experience.
